Sonnedix adds 38.7 MW of solar PV operating capacity to its Japan portfolio

Posted

Tokyo, Japan – Sonnedix Oita Solar, a 38.7 MW solar PV plant, began commercial operation on Monday, 16 March 2020. This is the first large scale solar PV project fully managed through the development, financing and construction phase by Sonnedix Japan for the Sonnedix Group, bringing the operating capacity of the Sonnedix Group’s portfolio to 95 MWp in Japan – with an additional 116 MWp, expected to reach COD in 2020.

Located in the Oita prefecture, the plant is expected to produce 46,400 MWh of clean energy during its first full year of operation. This is the equivalent to powering around 15,500 households, avoiding the emission of around 22,502 metric tons CO2 per year. The electricity generated by the solar plant will be sold to Kyushu Electric, through a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

Axel Thiemann, Sonnedix Group CEO, said: The beginning of the operations phase for Sonnedix Oita Solar marks a milestone for Sonnedix Japan, and the Sonnedix Group, as it consolidates our in-country-growth and expansion strategy, and positions us as one of the leading players in the Japanese solar market.

Sonnedix Japan, on behalf of the Sonnedix group of companies (the Sonnedix Group), currently manages more than 300 MW of solar PV capacity in operation or construction and over 500MW of total controlled capacity.

Sonnedix Oita Solar, built by Maetel Construction Japan, is powered by 340Wp LG ground- mounted modules, as well as 1,667kW central PV inverters manufactured by Toshiba- Mitsubishi-Electric Industrial Systems Corporation (TMEIC).

Project drives next phase of Sonnedix expansion in Japan

Tokyo, Japan – Sonnedix Japan K.K. (Sonnedix Japan) has announced financial close on a JPY 14.2 billion (EUR 113.9 million) project financing with Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank, Limited (SMTB) for the 36.4 MW Kurayoshi solar PV plant.

The 36.4 MW Kurayoshi solar PV plant is located in the Tottori Prefecture. The ‘Notice to Proceed’ was previously issued to the EPC contractor, Maetel Construction Japan, in November 2018, during the METI feed-in-tariff reduction proposal consultation.

Sonnedix Japan currently manages almost 250 MW of solar PV capacity in operation or construction on behalf of the Sonnedix group of companies (Sonnedix), which expects to exceed 500 MW of solar PV operational capacity in the next few years in Japan. The Kurayoshi solar PV plant, Sonnedix’s third ‘mega-plant’ to enter construction in the last 12 months, is expected to start operation in mid-2020.

“Achieving financial close for the Kurayoshi project is the latest milestone in our long-term commitment to the Japan market, and is testament to our confidence in achieving operational excellence for all our projects under the new governmental regulations announced in 2018,” said Axel Thiemann, CEO of Sonnedix. “I look forward to continued growth as Sonnedix Japan actively seeks opportunities to acquire quality solar PV projects in all stages of development.

The Kurayoshi solar PV plant will use over 100,000 Hanwha 345 Wp modules and 13 TMEIC central inverters. When completed, the plant will generate approximately 42,000 MWh of clean electricity per annum, equivalent to the amount consumed by approximately 12,000 households.

Tokyo, Japan – Sonnedix Japan K.K. (Sonnedix Japan) has reached financial close on a YEN 13.9 billion non-recourse debt facility with MUFG Bank, Ltd for the 46.6 MW Tono solar PV plant, on behalf of the Sonnedix group of companies.

This significant milestone comes less than a year after the project was acquired from its previous owners in June 2017, bringing Sonnedix’s total capacity in operation or under construction in Japan to 169 MW.   Assets in Japan are acquired or built and operated on behalf of Sonnedix by its operating partner, Sonnedix Japan, and this is a further step in the Japan growth strategy, which is on track to deliver over 400MW into operation in the next few years.

“We are very proud of the Tono project milestone, which means Sonnedix now has over 200 MW of capacity in construction across our global platform”, commented Andreas Mustad, Sonnedix CEO. “This is in parallel to the growth achieved over the last 12 months through the acquisition and integration of solar PV assets in other OECD countries. As our platform continues to scale, so does our commitment to its operational excellence in the long term.”

The EPC contractor, NEC Networks & System Integration Corporation, has begun construction of the solar plant, which is expected to start operations in early 2020. When completed, the solar plant is expected to generate over 53,000 MWh of clean electricity per annum, equivalent to the amount consumed by approximately 17,650 households.
